How the UJAA Robotics Story Began
The Board of Directors and Members of UJAA were introduced to robotics and the FIRST organization by Don Jones of Jamaica College Old Boys Association in 2009. Jamaica College (high school in Kingston, Jamaica) had been granted permission to participation in the FIRST Tech Challenge – New York City Region. UJAA followed JC’s lead by helping our high school alumni associations to work with their respective schools to establish Robotics Clubs as an extra-curricular activity. This led to the establishment of clubs at Merl Grove High School, Kingston College, Calabar, Immaculate Conception High School and Convent of Mercy Alpha Academy, to name a few. Over the past 13 years, Robotics Clubs has been established in at least 45 high schools across the island.
To us, the support of STEM education in general and robotics in particular, is a way to equip our young people with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century.
