UJAA and FLL – FIRST Lego Leagues
(To learn more: https://www.firstlegoleague.org/)
Today, the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (USA) Inc. (UJAA) Primary Schools Team is doing much more. We are now promoting robotics at the Primary School level in Jamaica. In 2023, we sponsored the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Competition for primary school students in Jamaica. Robotics is about the future, and that is why we are so passionate about lending it our support. You can share in our passion by electing to sponsor or donate.
2023: On a balmy Saturday, at Mona Heights campus of the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, the inaugural staging of the FIRST Lego Leagues Competition was held. Organized by FIRST Tech Challenge Jamaica (the authorized FIRST representative for the Caribbean), nine (9) primary schools from across the island competed in the event and were judged for their performance in the robot game, in robot design and for overall performance including teamwork and innovation.
Seven of the nine participating primary (elementary) schools were sponsored by their alumni associations in the USA who are members of UJAA. One additional school was directly sponsored by a friend of UJAA.
2024: On June 29, 2024, FTC Jamaica hosted the 2nd FLL Jamaica competition. Nineteen (19) of the twenty-two (22) registered teams competed. All but two (2) of the teams were sponsored by UJAA member organizations or a friend of UJAA. The competition was once again held at the UWI Mona Heights campus. The results of the competition as well as the streams of the event can be viewed here.
